Week 8 Term 1

It is hard to know where the last 8 weeks have gone in some respects but we have come such a long way. The children should be very proud of their successes!

This week we started hockey skills with Jarren. Each class in the school gets 3 lessons. Jarren was very impressed with our 'hockey haka' stance!

During maths this week we have been exploring the number 5. We started off by looking at all the different combinations that make the number 5 using the double sided counters. We did so well that we went onto hand patterns with 5!

We had such a fabulous 'Thursday Funday!'....guess who sneaked into our cupboard during lunchtime??!! Luckily we had made an Easter basket each so we could share them out!

To finish our week we had a special performance from 2 men from Brazil who were very talented musicians. They taught us a little about their country, instruments and culture.

Next week...
Our sound will be 'o'.
Our tricky word will be 'here'.
During maths we will be doing simple addition within 10.
Please remember it is a short week as school resumes on Wednesday after the Easter break.
Coming up soon we have a trip booked to go to the Museum for a session on Statistics and Measurement. I will require parent help to make this outing possible. More details will follow.

Have a happy and safe Easter break!

Week 7, Term 1

Friday Funday took on a new meaning this week as it was Purple Cake Day. Nelson Central School has been involved with Purple Cake Day for a number of years. Each syndicate organises it's own fundraising activity and we combine the money at the end of the day. This year we raised in excess of $1000 to donate to children in Haiti, Nepal and Kenya for a better life. We tried to dress in as much purple as possible.

We started the day with a whole school assembly. The choir was magnificent. We joined in with them for a couple of songs and then they performed a song which they had composed themselves. It was beautiful! We had some special guest speakers that came along to share some of the successful stories from the children we have helped in the past.

In the Kowhai syndicate we did face painting to raise money! Not everyone wanted to have their faces painted and that was okay.

Next week....
Our sounds will be d & g.
Our tricky words will be my and up.
Our maori word for the week is 'potae' - 'hat'.
During maths we will be adding with 5.
Please note that swimming has stopped for this term as the pool temperature has dropped considerably over the last week. The children have made great progress and we have certainly had a lot of fun.
This week is a short week as it is our Easter break. School finishes on Thursday at 3pm and resumes on Wednesday 30th March.

Have a happy and safe week!

Week 6, Term 2

At reading time we move through a variety of rotations. We get ten minutes at each station before we move onto the next. I-pads is an absolute favourite!

Once a week we get to go to 'No Child Left Inside' with Catherine. This is a programme designed to increase and improve our fundamental skills. This week we were learning about the overarm throw. We had to use our muscle arms! Catherine told us we had to dream about it so that we could get better!
